Common Use

Accutane is an isotretinoin prescription used for the treatment of serious skin disorders and some other conditions. Its active ingredient is derived from vitamin A and is naturally present in the human body, though in small amounts.

Side Effects

Side effects of Accutane are rare, as the medication is designed for long-term use. However, it may cause some of the following symptoms:

allergic reactions (sometimes severe) or skin rashes
vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea
drowsiness, sleepiness, and headache

It is advised to consult your doctor if any of these symptoms occur.

Precautions

To reduce the risk of side effects, your doctor must approve treatment with Accutane if you:

are allergic to any foods, medications, or other substances
suffer from osteoporosis, kidney, liver, or heart conditions
have bone issues
have diabetes
have asthma
are currently taking any prescribed or over-the-counter medications, antibiotics, steroids (e.g., prednisone), anti-seizure medications containing phenytoin, vitamin A or medications containing it
are sensitive to any components of Accutane
are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a baby
have a history of being allergic to Accutane or other retinoids

An overdose of Accutane may also cause:

heart rhythm problems (irregular or too fast)
dizziness
