Arcoxia is a modern medication used in rheumatology for the treatment of common, socially significant diseases of the musculoskeletal system, primarily of an inflammatory nature. It belongs to the group of highly selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors and has both analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. It can also be used as a febrifuge and has a favorable safety profile. The drug is popular for treating musculoskeletal diseases and aids in the recovery of dental conditions following surgical interventions. Its therapeutic potential for chronic rheumatic diseases has been demonstrated through extensive, long-term studies. Arcoxia provides a significant reduction in pain, inflammatory activity, and improves overall patient well-being.
The drug works by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2, leading to decreased levels of prostaglandins in affected tissues and the nervous system. This results in reduced pain and inflammation. The therapeutic effect begins within 24 minutes of administration and lasts for 24 hours.
Indications:
Arcoxia is used to treat musculoskeletal system diseases associated with acute pain syndromes, including:
- Rheumatoid arthritis: An autoimmune disease characterized by asymmetrical cartilage and bone tissue damage.
- Osteoarthritis: Damage to joint structure and tissue changes.
- Acute gouty arthritis: Resulting from protein metabolism disorders, with increased uric acid levels in the blood.
- Ankylosing spondylitis: A chronic disease with inflammation of the spine joints.
- Chronic or acute myalgia: Severe muscle pain often accompanied by weakness and swelling.
Dosage and Administration:
The drug is taken orally. To achieve maximum effect, it should be taken on an empty stomach. The dosage varies based on the condition being treated:
- Osteoarthritis: Initial dose of 30 mg daily, which can be increased to 60 mg if needed. Consult a doctor if there is no effect.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: 60 mg once daily, with a possible increase to 90 mg if necessary. Reduce to 60 mg once daily upon clinical stabilization.
- Ankylosing spondylitis: 60 mg daily, increased to 90 mg if symptoms persist. Reduce to 60 mg once daily after stabilization.
- Acute pain: Use only during exacerbations.
- Acute gouty arthritis: 120 mg daily for eight days.
- Postoperative pain: Maximum of 90 mg per day for three days after complex dental procedures.
- Older patients: No dosage adjustment needed, but require constant medical supervision.
- Liver dysfunction:
- Light severity (5-6): Do not exceed 30 mg daily.
- Moderate severity (7-9): Do not exceed 30 mg once daily.
- Severe form: Avoid use.
Overdose:
Symptoms of overdose may include:
- Increased side effects
- Cardiovascular system disorders
- Increased swelling
- Arrhythmias
- Hypertension
There is no specific antidote for Arcoxia; symptomatic treatment is recommended in case of overdose.
